Back in the 1980's we were, as a nation, encouraged to Challenge Anneka. Well, on February 2nd at the Star Wars Charity Dinner at the London Hilton, Park Lane Table 23, competing under the name of the Qui-Gon Jinn and Tonics did just that. And here's what she had to say in reply.

Following on from the announcement of what will be happening in the US, we've now received the press release for enhanced screenings of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace in Canada!

Celebrate Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace As it Returns to Theatres in Spectacular RealD® 3D with Exclusive Activities and Giveaways at Select Cineplex Entertainment Theatres

The first chapter of the Star Wars Saga arrives in theatres for the first time ever in 3D starting February 10, and select Cineplex theatres across Canada are celebrating the occasion with plans to make opening weekend one for fans and families to remember!

To mark the return of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace to theatres, now in immersive 3D, kids, collectors and Star Wars fans of all ages are invited to attend exclusive events taking place in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver on Saturday, February 11 starting at 11 a.m local time. Select Cineplex theatres will be offering activities, giveaways, and interactive experiences. Fans can expect (while supplies last):

Discounted CW, SL & TVC at London Drugs

Whilst checking out my local London Drugs in search of the elusive wave 2 of Movie Heroes, I discovered that figures from The Clone Wars, Saga Legends and The Vintage Collection (from the previous assortment 97568) have all been marked down to $7.

Whilst the figures on display were mostly older waves, it still provides the opportunity to pick some up on the cheap.

General Mills Star Wars Promotion Not Coming to Canada

D. Martin Myatt over at Rebelscum has reported that there will likely be no General Mills Star Wars Promotion for Canada.

Here's what he had to say:

General Mills confirmed today that their cereal box promotion for The Phantom Menace is not currently planned to hit Canadian supermarkets. Canadian collectors looking forward to getting the pen sets and cereal boxes in their collections should start looking at acquiring the US packages

Star Wars Charity Dinner A Huge Success

We cannot stress enough what a totally brilliant night was had by all at the Star Wars Charity Dinner at the London Hilton, Park Lane last night. Guests included Warwick Davis, Jeremy Bulloch and Nick Gillard as well as Harry from McFly and 80's presenter Anneka Rice. Edith Bowman, seen above in her classic Leia costume, and Rude Tube's Alex Zane did a great job of presenting the night, alongside former England rugby player Martin Bayfield who raucously oversaw the raffle and auction.

And don't forget, it was a charity dinner and quiz and as well as raising well in advance of £40,000 on the night the guests on Table 23, competing under the name of Qui-Gon Jinn and Tonic did rather well. It might have helped having Jonathan Wilkins from The Insider, Mark McKenzie-Ray from the Galaxy magazine, James Burns and myself on the team but hey, we were up against Warwick Davis on the next table and the pressure was on.

We'll bring more photo's from the event over the next few days and we're all hoping to defend our 2012 MediCinema Quiz Wars trophies next year!

Denise Vasquez Wins Darth Vader Helmet Art Contest

Closing Reception for Star Wars Exhibition and Screening of "Hughes the Force"

Saturday 28th January marked the closing reception for a Star Wars exhibit, "These Are The Droids Your Looking For", at Ltd. Art Gallery in Seattle, run by James Monosmith, formerly of Acme Archives Limited, and also a screening of Hughes the Force. I had the pleasure of being invited down by the movie's producer, Ruark Dreher, and after an all-too-close encounter with a Seattle sidewalk(!), met up with both James and Ruark, as well as Hughes the Force's writer and director, J.C. Reifenberg and two of its stars, Taylor Treadwell (Leia) and Nathaniel Weiss (Simon).

Located on E Pike Street, the gallery proved to be a pleasant intimate setting for the screening, and it was especially nice considering the fine pieces of art that were on display, from the likes of reknowned Star Wars artists Brian Rood, Christian Waggoner, William Silvers, Jerry Vanderstelt and Mike Kungl, as well as a number of pieces that were included in Star Wars Art: Visions a few years ago, and many more besides. I won't reveal which was my favourite piece from the show, but if money were no object, I could certainly see myself becoming more of an art lover! Also dotted around the gallery were a number of high-end collectibles from such licensees as Sideshow, Gentle Giant and eFX, giving everyone who came plenty of ways to part with their hard-earned money!

The combination of the screening and the exhibit proved to be enough of an incentive to bring out a good crowd, and several members of the 501st/Rebel Legion/Mando Mercs were also out in force (excuse the pun!) to pose for photographs and also keep everyone in order. Fortunately, as someone with the Force as his ally, I was able to convince the weak-minded fools that I was not the Jedi they were looking for! The attendees were treated to wine, beer and munchies to keep their hands and mouths busy whilst they perused the artwork, and Ruark, J.C., Nate and Taylor mingled with the guests, stopping for photographs and a bit of ribald banter. With the event being posted on Facebook, it was also an opportunity to meet up friends new and old, bumping into the likes of Gus Lopez among other people.

When it came time for the screening, the lights went down and everyone huddled behind the projector. After a few technical hitches (they told me they'd fixed it! The movie was certainly well received, with the audience laughing in all of the right places, and it was met with rapturous applause when James Arnold Taylor, still clothed in his Jedi robes, dismissed everyone to signal the end of the film.

With the lights back on, Ruark & co. took a few questions, after which, with the crowds slowly dispersing, J.C. took the opportunity to record a couple of videos with Nate and Taylor. With a nearly 200 km journey back home ahead of me, I sadly had to leave earlier than I would have liked, but I was certainly glad to have made the effort to go and wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing again.

I want to say a big thank you to Ruark for inviting me down to such a great event, and also for being such a wonderful host along with J.C., Nate and Taylor, and not forgetting James for opening up his gallery for the screening.

The novel is about an avid (and obsessive) Star Wars collector who gets stranded in a small Iowa town with a runaway fugitive - he's trying to get to his parents' funeral and she's trying to avoid the law. A somewhat longer description: 60 hours before his parents’ joint funeral, 29-year-old Star Wars collector Dennis Harwell finds himself stranded in the tiny town of Walnut, Iowa, with Star, a brash 20-year-old punk rock girl. As their problems mount, the pair must work together if they are going to escape Walnut.

DIY Inventor Creates Ewok Village...in Oregon

As Star Wars fans we all have our boltholes. It could be a collection room, your bedroom at your folks house, a bookcase on the landing or if you're a world-renowned collector, Rancho Obi-Wan.

But there can't be too many folks who have their very own Ewok Village. Check out the info after the break and enjoy this fascinating video.

In 1974, fresh out of the army, Michael Garnier went to rural Oregon to try to make a living off the woods. He tried making furniture, fences, pole barns and selling organic, psychedelic picture propellers (to see Fantasy Flakes), but finally it was a treehouse that got him all the attention.

Modeled after the treehouse he had once built for his kids, his first treehouse B&B was completed in 1990. Today he has 9 treehouses for rent, 20 staircases, 5 or 6 bridges, several platforms and zip lines for rapid descent and at least one fireman's pole. Some of his treehouses even have toilets, running water and showers, though he warns guests to "stand when they flush". Over the years, Garnier has become legend in his industry and helped invent a better way to build a treehouse. Instead of bolting wood to wood (i.e. beams to the tree), Garnier and his colleagues at the World Treehouse Conference (an event he used to host) developed a way to attach steel bolts and cuffs to the tree.

Dubbed the Garnier Limb (or G.L.), this open source design can support 8,000 pounds. Garnier sells GLs of all different types as well as plans to build your own treehouse. His DIY treehouses are for 12 foot trees ($150) and he sells about 30 or 40 plans per year.

Star Wars Underworld To Include Time Travel?

This may be false, it may be fandom playing tricks or it might turn out to be true but Aint it Cool claim to have received a key plot point from the highly anticipated first episode of the Star Wars Underworld live-action series.

While the source is 'untested', Aint it Cool seem happy enough to post this potential spoiler.

Daniel tells us that one of the series' first episodes will involve a group of bandits acquiring the capability of time travel, and using it to travel back in time to stop Darth Vader from ever existing.

This is certainly in keeping with past indications we've heard about the show - that it would involve the "darker" side of the STAR WARS universe, criminal factions, Empire building, etc. While "time travel" is relatively new to the film and television canon of the STAR WARS universe, it's a factor that has at least been acknowledge/discussed in the franchise's "Extended Universe" (details HERE). As such, its potential inclusion in this show is not as remarkable as one might initially believe.

What do you think? Are we ready for time travel in the STAR WARS mythos, or might its presence provide an irresistible temptation for Lucas to organically revise STAR WARS history even further?

Jedi News Book Review - Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual

Whoever came up with the idea to do a Haynes Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual needs their head checking...to see if they have any more brilliant ideas tucked away in their genius noggin! And you thought I was going to say something negative; oh yea of little faith!

Aimed at both DIY enthusiasts and professional garage mechanics, Haynes Manuals have been around for decades, and now Star Wars fans have been added to the target audience, with the release of the Millennium Falcon Owner's Workshop Manual.

The familiar team of Ryder Windham, Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas are behind this impressive guide to the Modified YT-1300 Corellian Freighter that we first saw back in 1977 and the front cover, showing a cutaway-view technical drawing of the Falcon, mirrors perfectly the cover illustrations of the regular editions, and would likely provoke a double-take were it to be nestled between other titles in the series.

In order to detail the numerous special modifications made to the Millenium Falcon, the first chapter of the book traces the history of the Corellian Engineering Corporation's YT series of spaceships and the development of the YT-1300 model line. Photographs, line art, floor plans, exploded diagrams as well as exceptional computer-generated artwork are used to describe in detail the onboard systems, controls and their operation.

The second chapter, focusing on the Millennium Falcon itself, is broken down into sections that discuss operational history, show views, a cutaway, and a floor plan, and concludes with profiles of two of its most famous owners, Lando Calrissian and Han Solo, the latter accompanied by his ever-faithful Wookiee companion, Chewbacca.

The remaining seven chapters cover the standard YT-1300 operations starting off by taking a look at piloting, with sections that describe the cockpit controls (forward and aft), navigation / nav computer, hyperspace travel, how to fly the falcon (casually!), combat techniques and rounding out with manoeuvres, both special and evasive.

The next chapter, Propulsion, documents the hyperdrive, sublight drives, repulsor lifts & landing jets and fuel systems that power the YT-1300, and provides some background as to how the Falcon got pimped. However, there is one surprising omission, which is the whereabouts of the reverse power-flux coupling that happened to be isolated by a certain protocol droid.

Topics such as quad laser cannons, concussion missiles, shield generators and projectors are the focus of the chapter on Weapons and Defensive Systems, with the subsequent chapter offering instructions and guideliness on maintaining and controlling the YT-1300's Engineering Systems that are found within the engine room, engineering and technical stations, and incorporating hardware including the Hanx-Wargel computer as well as a power core and power converter.

The chapter on YT-1300 Sensors details the ship's sensor suite, specifically the passive sensor / scan-mode transceiver, main sensor rectanna, topographic sensors and IFF transponder, whilst the penultimate chapter highlights the crew facilities, such as crew quarters, emergency equipment, recreation, docking rings & hatches, a boarding ramp, escape pods and finally, spacesuits.

A size comparison chart rounds out the book, and shows how the Falcon measures up to similarly-scaled craft, such as the A-Wing, B-Wing, X-Wing, Y-Wing and Blockade Runner from the Rebel Alliance fleet, as well as the Empire's TIE Fighter, TIE Advanced and also TIE Interceptor, but also how the Corellian Freighter is dwarfed by larger capital ships like Mon Cal Star Cruiser and Kuat Drive Yards Imperial I-Class Star Destroyer.
