News from our friends on the Emerald Isle continues to trickle in as we are ever nearer the start of shooting in early May of Episode VIII in Ireland. Construction on access routes and set builds has begun, and accomodation is in place for the crew. The total allocated build, shoot, and dismantle period, restricted by license, is twelve weeks.
This fits perfectly with reports of an early May shoot, which was originally revealed last year when the request for permission of the Skellig Michael September shoot included a statement that they may seek to return in May.
The shoot at Ceann Sibeal, will take place at Sybil Head, a private piece of land which normally gives permission for walkers to use the route. The build here of a temporary road, is well underway with cranes at the summit of the Head building sets described by our man of the ground as "reminiscent of the iconic Skellig beehive huts"
Per government issued papers, the shoot at Sybil Head will last for five days, with a maximum of 200 cast and crew allowed on site. Helicopter filming has been permitted with a minumum height of 300 feet to be maintained.
Running concurrently with the Sybil Head shoot will be a shoot at Brow Head in West Cork. A similar twelve week total on site time has been allowed, and again five days of actual filming will take place. Temporary roads, and a similar set design is also being built on this private piece of land. You can take a closer look at Brow Head, in the below Google Street View map.
It would appear that the filming plan is to have the shoot facing out over the waters, and try to recreate the look and feel of Skellig Michael on a piece of land with more freedom of movement and less architectural difficulties that Skellig Michael presents. Building similar huts as those found on the isles may also provide them with more artistic license in how our cast and crew interact with their surroundings than the historical significance of the real huts may allow. Of course we could be introduced to other parts of Ach-to that we have not yet seen... we will find our for sure in December 2017!!
