EXCLUSIVE: Angry Birds Star Wars New York Times Square Toys ‘R’ Us Debut

We arrived at the Times Square Toys ‘R’ Us at around 7:45am for the 10:00am scheduled opening. There were some TRU employees standing outside the doors handing out Angry Birds Star Wars stickers and black tote bags to approaching fans who were getting in line.

At around 9:00am, the employees held a brief Angry Birds trivia contest, with the prizes being two different Angry Birds Star Wars t-shirts. One of the t-shirts was black with a pig Imperial logo on the front and the words “Join The Pig Side” on the back. The other t-shirt was white with the Rebel bird logo on the front and the words “May The Birds Be With You” on the back.

Shortly before 10:00am, the creator of Angry Birds, Peter Vesterbacka, was seen chatting with fans waiting on line outside the store. He even allowed a few of us to see a quick demo of Angry Birds Star Wars in action on his iPad! I didn’t get to catch much of the demo, as there was a small child (maybe 3 or 4 years old) at the head of the line who Peter was showing the game to on his iPad.

From what I could see peeringĀ over his shoulder, it looked like a regular Angry Birds game skinned over with Star Wars, though I’m sure there is a LOT more to it than that. Also, I didn’t hear any audio during the demo (not sure if it was a limitation of the demo or just that he had the volume turned down on his iPad). Peter then moved on farther down the line of fans giving them a quick peek as well.

At 10:00am, we were ushered into Toys ‘R’ Us and directed to a small room located on the third floor where the Angry Birds Star Wars merchandise was out on several display tables. There was also a large backdrop with an awesome Chewbacca Angry Bird ready for you to pose next to him for pics! Peter Vesterbacka was on hand to answer questions and gladly posed for a few pics with fans in attendance. Before exiting the room, fans were treated to an extremely cool collectible – a limited edition Angry Birds Star Wars poster! The poster had an edition size of only 1,000 pieces and was designed by an artist from Sweden modeled after artwork by Drew Struzan.

Sadly, none of the display merchandise was available for sale, as the official street date is October 28th.

Eagerly looking forward to seeing more of Angry Birds Star Wars at New York Comic Con later this week!
