Star Wars fans are renowned for their creativity
If you had told Dawn Unruh a month ago that her Queen Amidala costume, made without a pattern on a $99 sewing machine, would win an award from Disney, she probably would not have believed you.
The 32-year-old Riverside resident entered a costume contest through D23, a Disney fan club that holds an expo every other year. This year’s event was Aug. 9-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Unruh was required to write up a detailed description of her costume. From there, Disney selected a smaller group of about 40 contestants to perform and compete at the contest. From there, five were selected for prizes, including awards for original design, re-creation, craftsmanship, young fan and best in show. Unruh won the best in show award, naming her the top performer at the event.
