Featuring Leia Organa, Rey, Phasma, and dozens of other characters from across the galaxy of films, books, comics, animation, and games, these dynamically illustrated cards celebrate the fascinating female characters of Star Wars— perfect to keep or send and share.
Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy by Amy Ratcliffe was one of the stand out literature releases of 2018. It wasn’t just about the written content, for me it was the accompanying artwork which took it to the next level. So, I was really pleased when Abrams Chronicle Books announced that they’d be releasing the art in the form of a box set of 100 postcards featuring all the artwork from the book.
The outer box is a nice and simple design, with a lot of the artwork displayed on the outside. The main cover artwork has been changed from the book. With Princess Leia now looking out from the cover instead of Rey, it helps for this postcard set to have its own identity and give it a step away from the book itself.
When you open it, the ribbon helps you pull the cards from their box and you can start to browse each one. The quality of the postcards and the printing is excellent. All the postcards are in a matt finish, which I must say is a bonus as it would result in finger marks being left on them had it been glossy. They are presented in alphabetical order, like the book, with the character and artists name on the rear.
There is a great British tradition of sending postcards to loved ones and friends when on holiday, you will pay around £1 for these. So, for £17.99 you are getting 100 postcards, and in a presentation box, I think that this is excellent value for money. Admittedly, these are too nice to send, so I don’t expect to be sending of these out.
It’s nice to see the artwork from such a wonderful set of artists, being given the same treatment as Ralph McQuarrie’s work has previously.
‘Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy 100 Postcards’ is published by Chronicle Books and was released on 9th April 2019. It is available from all good bookstores on the high street and via Amazon and other online retailers with a RRP of UK £16.99/US $19.95.
