The Synopsis:

AN ALL-NEW ONGOING SERIES SPINNING OUT OF STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS! Poe Dameron, former Republic flyer turned Resistance fighter, is the best pilot in the galaxy. Hand-picked for the resistance by General Leia Organa to lead a squadron on a top-secret and vital mission…Poe sets off investigating sites of historical importance to the Force. Revealing back story leading directly into the holiday’s’ greatest adventure, follow Poe and his X-Wing squadron on covert missions against the First Order brought to you by writer Charles Soule (Star Wars: Lando, Daredevil) and artist Phil Noto (Star Wars: Chewbacca, Black Widow)!

The Plot:

We join the story as The best pilot in the galaxy is doing some fancy flying in his sleek black X-Wing through a cave, being safely guided past the hazards by BB-8. After their close escape the story goes into flashback mode, to when General Organa issues Poe his orders to go to Jakku and find Lor San Tekka who has vital information regarding the Resistances’ saviour, one Luke Skywalker!

Poe chooses a crack team of pilots to accompany him on the mission, and they are christened ‘Black Squadron’

The story then flips back into the present and Poe’s X-wing has arrived in a large underground cavern which was the last known whereabouts of Lor San Tekka & home to a large blue glowing egg?!

Poe is ambushed by what appears to be a strange cult who worship the egg and are unwilling to tell Poe where lor san tekka has gone or as they call him….The Explorer.

After a while BB-8 finds a tracking device on Poe’s X-Wing, Poe tries to alert his comrades who are above the surface, but its too late….The First Order have arrived!

The Review:

What I enjoy most about Star Wars literature is that you get to find out more of the story than you do in the movies, and some questions you have, get answered. For instance Poe Dameron takes us to a time just before the start of The Force Awakens as Poe gets his orders from Leia to find ‘The Explorer’ or as he is better known Lor San Tekka. I like others have wondered since the movie was released, who is this man? I am reading these comics hoping to find some answers! Apart from The Force Awakens comic book adaptation, this is the most current storyline to the film so it’s a great up to date place to start.

This was a slow but solid start to the series and left me wanting to read the next one straight away, which is a good sign. I’m also glad that they didn’t give away too many secrets too soon.  Some parts of Poe’s dialogue were a bit cheesy for my liking, but I found that in The Force Awakens too. I’m also keen to see why the cult worship the glowy faberge egg type of thing and what influence they or the egg have on future issues.  In the last panel the first order Stormtroopers also seem to be wearing jetpacks to maneuver into the cavern where Poe and BB-8 are investigating the egg, reminds me of the Stormtroopers in the battlefront video game and i can’t help the fanboy wondering if we might see these jetpack troopers in a movie form in the future.

One word for the art ‘Awesome’. The panels look clean, fresh and crisp and the abstract landscapes don’t lack the detail to make them look authentic. Nearly Every character is captured perfectly, both Leia and Poe are brilliantly drawn, it’s art like this that makes me wish i could draw!

The only character in  my opinion looked a bit off was Snap Wexley, but that’s just me.

To summarise….Everything drew me into the story and it was a joy to read. I cant wait to see what happens and who might turn up in future issues.  If you don’t read comics but liked The Force Awakens and want to learn more about the story, then start your comic journey with this one!
