At the Force Friday reveal event at Pinewood Studios yesterday, we got to see all the new LEGO Star Wars sets coming out on October 4th, view our gallery here.
On hand at the event was LEGO Star Wars design manager, Michael Lee Stockwell. We spoke to Michael about the new range and he told us that he was responsible for the awesome looking Resistance Y-Wing Starfighter (set #75249). He walked us through the rest of the range including the new 1,351 piece Millennium Falcon which dispenses with the old-style opening and now features a fully furnished interior with an improved opening mechanism, eliminating the gaps at the top. The mandibles at the front of the Falcon have also been refined using the new 6 by 4 angled slope. We were most impressed with the new design, and we jokingly suggested the need for a new UCS version using the same building methods.
Michael then showed us the 5-up model for the new droid D-O, alongside the existing minifigures of BB-8 and R2-D2 for scale. He explained how D-O was built to meet the needs of the Star Wars character but also as a fully functioning LEGO element, 2 bricks high and 1 brick wide, with multiple connection points. It will be interesting to see this element used in other sets in different colours, for greebling or other purposes. D-O is one of the seven minifigures included with the new Millennium Falcon alongside Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, C-3PO, Finn, Boolio and R2-D2.
Thanks to Michael for walking us through the new range.
