“My ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we.”
Few books or games have had as enduring an impact upon the Star Wars galaxy and its fans as Star Wars™: The Roleplaying Game. Originally published by West End Games in 1987, it arrived at a time when the future of the Star Wars galaxy was uncertain, and it captivated a whole generation of gamers with rules and guidelines that made it possible to design and enjoy adventures truly worthy of the Star Wars universe and its ongoing space opera.
Now Fantasy Flight Games is proud to offer faithful recreations of this influential rulebook and The Star Wars™ Sourcebook. Our Star Wars™: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition is a limited edition set of both books, printed with higher quality than the originals and packaged in a stylized slipcase.
These books were sent to Timothy Zahn as references when he started to develop Grand Admiral Thrawn and his Thrawn trilogy. They introduced materials that were later adopted into Star Wars canon, such as the names of alien races like the Twi’lek, Rodians, and Quarren. They even inspired members of the Lucasfilm Story Group as they worked on their writers’ bible.
It hit the market at the height of the tabletop roleplaying craze, it reinvigorated thousands of Star Wars fans and it became the foundation for the Star Wars Expanded Universe – this, my friends and allies, is the original West End Games Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game… and Fantasy Flight Games are releasing a 30th Anniversary set of the first two books in a gorgeous slipcase to mark the birthday of an extremely important event in Star Wars history!
With a fluid and adaptable system that was easy to learn, a mechanic that perfectly represented the high-adventure and cinematic action of the movies, Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game dragged fans and gamers into George Lucas’s universe and gave them the chance to create their own adventures, stories and legends. The material and sourcebooks that followed expanded the galaxy and told us so much about how the Star Wars universe worked, and gave backgrounds to everything we had seen on the big screen. With new material hitting the shelves regularly, the game became beloved by players and collectors everywhere.
On a personal note, these very rulebooks were my go-to sci-fi game for two decades, and they still sit proudly on my shelf after all this time. This game spawned our own Setnin Sector in all it’s glory, and hundreds of characters, hundreds of worlds and literally hundreds of adventures spilled from just these books. This has always been the game I advise people to buy when they’re just starting out in gaming as it contains all you need to get started.
