As expected given the recent comments made by CEO Bob Iger, Disney Studios has announced that the next theatrical film in the Star Wars saga post-Episode IX will be arriving in a few years as part of their updated film release schedule. The next Star Wars film is slated to be released on December 16, 2022 followed by a film scheduled for December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026. As you can see from the listed dates, there will be a two year gap between the release of each new film moving forward.
With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker bringing the original Skywalker Saga to its conclusion, three new as-yet-untitled Star Wars films will release on the pre-Christmas weekend every other year beginning in 2022.
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy offered up these comments during Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019 about the future of the Star Wars saga post-Episode IX.
It remains unclear which series of films will be arriving first as we head beyond Episode IX and the Skywalker saga – the trilogy of films coming from Rian Johnson or the new films being developed by Game of Thrones creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.
