Vanity Fair: Details on Finn’s Origin Coming in The Rise of Skywalker

With The Rise of Skywalker set to close out the story of the Skywalker legend, Lucasfilm and director J.J. Abrams worked towards making Episode IX a satisfying ending to not only the Sequel Trilogy, but the previous six Star Wars episodic films that came before it. One of the main questions that arose during the events of The Force Awakens centered around the First Order Stormtrooper designated FN-2187 played by John Boyega who would later receive the nickname Finn from ace Resistance pilot Poe Dameron.

What was the story of this character before viewers first saw him on screen at the beginning of Episode VII? Abrams says in an interview with Vanity Fair that The Rise of Skywalker will provide details on Finn’s backstory in addition to the origins of other characters as well. We shouldn’t expect complete soup-to-nuts historic descriptions for each character, but the curtains will be pulled back a bit more.

“I would say that each of the characters get more light shed on their histories,” Abrams added. “I’m not saying we get full, exhaustive downloads on all of their childhoods and every major step that got them to where they are. But there are a lot of questions about Finn’s past, about Poe’s past, obviously Rey and Kylo, and then some of the new characters we meet.”
