Over the weekend The Lion King re-make became the second highest grossing film of 2019, and also overtook Star Wars: The Last Jedi at the box office. The Lion King currently has a worldwide total of $1,334,603,826, just $2 million more that the total obtained by The Last Jedi at $1,332,539,889. The Lion King still has legs though and is likely to close close to $1.4 billion.
Disney’s “The Lion King” secured third place, adding $20 million during its fourth outing. Jon Favreau’s photorealistic remake of the animated classic has amassed $1.33 billion globally, surpassing “Beauty and the Beast” ($1.26 billion) to become the studio’s biggest live-action film in history. With $472.8 million in North America, “The Lion King” is also the second-highest grossing movie of the year domestically.
The Lion King is also the studio’s highest grossing film outside of Marvel and Star Wars.
