Rogue One continues to blast through box office hurdles as it reaches the $900 million barrier in just 26 days as it notches up a fourth weekend at number one in North America and opens in China.
With its $56.4 million dollar weekend, including that $31 million dollar opening in China, the film now sits in the number 5 position for 2016, closing the $52 million dollar gap to The Jungle Book. $86 million dollars will take it through the billion dollar barrier, a hurdle even more likely to be broken in the next 2 weeks now that China comes into the equation. The film is currently the 41st highest grossing film of all time, just $5 million behind Shrek 2. Reaching a billion will propel it into 28th position and consequently make it the 28th film to cross a billion. It’s worth noting that a decade ago, only 3 films had crossed the billion – Titanic, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man’s Chest. Both Jurassic Park and The Phantom Menace crossed the billion thanks to their 3D re-releases.
