Multiple sources have told BuzzFeed News that a film based on the popular Knights of the Old Republic video game franchise is currently in development at Lucasfilm. The project is reportedly being written by Laeta Kalogridis and may be the start of a brand new trilogy of films centered around KOTOR.
Kalogridis is close to finishing the first script of a potential KOTOR trilogy, according to the three sources. She is the first woman writer of a Star Wars movie since The Empire Strikes Back in 1980, when Leigh Brackett received a cowriting credit with Lawrence Kasdan.
We know this project will not be attached to the 2022 release time frame as that slot is going to be occupied by HBO’s Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss and it may not be released in 2024 or 2026 either. If this report turns out to be accurate, it would mark the third set of Star Wars films being developed for a post-Episode IX release under the Disney umbrella joining Rian Johnson’s upcoming trilogy and the Benioff & Weiss films.
Last month, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy mentioned the possibility of incorporating KOTOR-based content in future Star Wars films during an interview at Celebration Chicago 2019, so this latest report could have some serious legs to it.
