One of the true masters of sci-fi has passed. Carlo Rambaldi may not be a name that instantly springs to the mind of Star Wars fans in the same manner as Ralph McQuarrie, but to children of the classic 70’s and 80’s sci-fi era he was a titan.

A much respected practical special effects artist, his list of films are an honour-roll of classic sci-fi cinema. E.T, Close Encounters, Alien, Conan. His careful craftsmanship allowed Steven Spielberg to have at hand a fully articulate main character in E.T, creating an instant icon.

Along with Stuart Freeborn, Rob Bottin and Rick Baker he represented an age of practical effects work that defined the era. Both he and his work will never be forgotten.
