During last month’s Star Wars Celebration held in Orlando, Episode VIII director Rian Johnson revealed the name of a new planet that we will see in The Last Jedi this December. Yesterday, as part of Vanity Fair’s exclusive coverage of the film, we learnt the name of a new casino city from The Last Jedi, called Canto Bight.
It is understood from Vanity Fair that the exterior shots of Canto Bight were shot on location in Dubrovnik, Croatia, whilst the casino interiors were shot at Pinewood Studios. During the shoot, locals in the City of Dubrovnik managed to take photos, which were subsequently leaked on social media – although these new official photos give us a close-up glimpse at many of the patrons at Canto Bight, as well as the information detailing that Finn and Rose are on a mission there for the resistance.
Is Canto Bight the first dedicated casino planet in the Star Wars galaxy, or is it simply a casino similar to that found on Cloud City? Casinos have long been a part of history on our own planet, and it will be interesting to see how and where Canto Bight fits on the Star Wars galaxy map.
As can be seen from the Vanity Fair photos, Canto Bight introduces us to lots of new characters, but it is not yet known who those characters are, and what part they play in the plot of The Last Jedi. Will we see the new characters played by Laura Dern and Benicio Del Toro in the Casino, and what about returning characters like Finn, Leia and Chewbacca? It will also be interesting to see how the Casio patrons fit into our favourite Galaxy, and what planets they’ve come from. We have previously only seen decadent clothes as these in the Opera scene which took place during Attack of the Clones, and also those worn by the Queen of Naboo. Clothing has always been very carefully picked out for characters in Star Wars, but these costumes do seem rather out-of-place. The pictures so far show characters in relatively ‘normal’ black tie/evening wear attire that wouldn’t be out of place at a high society function, wedding or any other formal occasion. It will be interesting to see how these characters, and the costumes they wear, play their part in Rian Johnson’s film.
Canto Bight didn’t feature at all in the first trailer shown at last month’s Star Wars Celebration, but regardless the trailer lead to lots of speculation. Perhaps the most significant moment in the trailer is the last few seconds, when Luke says ‘It’s time for the Jedi to end’. Theories range from Luke flirting with the dark side, to him suggesting that the Force shouldn’t be used anymore, but perhaps the line was highlighted just to throw us all of the plot of the film!
We look forward to more footage from The Last Jedi soon, perhaps at D23 and/or San Diego Comic-Con both towards the end of July. Perhaps that footage will also include Canto Bight, we can only hope….
