Ian McDiarmid Doesn’t Want Anyone Else To Play The Emperor

In an ideal world neither do we, but with standalone films looking more likely to delve into the past than strike out for the future it seems likely another actor will inhabit the role at some juncture.

That said, Ian McDiarmid has made it clear that as long as he is able to inhabit the role, which has always been significantly older than the actor himself, he’d like to play him.

“As far as the new films are concerned, I’m dead. There is no question about that.

“But there is what they call the anthology series and actually the most recent one, Rogue One, was about the time when I was in charge.

“I was referred to a few times, Darth Vader popped up, but you did not see me.

“Maybe they are keeping me as a surprise for later but I have no idea. Of course, I don’t want anyone else to play him.”

A Rogue One appearance would have been appropriate, although given that we never saw the Emperor in A New Hope then perhaps Gareth Edwards and company wanted to steer closer to that. Either way, another Palpatine performance from McDiarmid would delight all fans of the saga.
