Remember the scene in Revenge of the Sith where Obi-Wan Kenobi takes down several of General Grievous’ Magnaguards in one shot on Utapau by using the Force to pull down a section from the ceiling and crushing them with it? Turns out that was not George Lucas’ initial vision for that particular fight sequence. The scene was originally designed to have Obi-Wan engage in a heated lightsaber fight with six Magnaguards, a battle that stunt coordinator Nick Gillard believes is the best lightsaber fight ever choreographed for a Star Wars film.
However, due to production time constraints and overall plot application, the lightsaber battle was dropped in favor of the quicker fight scene involving the ceiling crush method.
There is “a better one” fans never saw, [Nick] Gillard said — a Revenge of the Sith fight in which Obi-Wan takes on six of General Grievous’ bodyguards at the same time.
Star Ewan McGregor trained for weeks just to get Obi-Wan’s choreography down for the complicated sequence. But when it came time to film, the production was running short on time. Since the fight wasn’t essential to the story line, George Lucas invented a simpler to eliminate the bodyguards: Obi-Wan uses the Force to crush them with a piece of the ceiling.
“It was the most complicated fight we ever did, and George said, ‘I’m really sorry, I’m going to drop a container on five of them!’”
Oh to have seen Ewan in action like this.
