As US domestic records fell, internationally it took more than $400 million more than the previous record holder, mostly due to it opening in China at the same time. In China it took over $330 million making it the second highest market, with the UK coming in third place at $53.8 million. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Endgame already ranks as the sixth largest release, and worldwide it currently sits in eighteenth position.

Disney now holds the 1st and 2nd position at the 2019 worldwide box office with Avengers: Endgame and Captain Marvel respectively, and Dumbo in 7th position. How many of their other releases will round out the top ten with a plethora of releases still to come including Aladdin, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2 and of course The Rise of Skywalker among others.

Many of the records set by The Force Awakens have already been surpassed and it seems likely that it will beat the $2,068 million total it took at the box office over the coming weeks. Beyond that, can it sink Titanic with $2,187 million and even reach the dizzy heights of Avatar with $2,788 million? The next 7-10 days will show how much staying power the film has and also how it fares with repeat viewings.

Will the December release of The Rise of Skywalker, the culmination of the Skywalker saga, manage to beat these totals? Let us know your thoughts.
