Next year we celebrate 20 years of Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. No matter what you thought of the film or the characters the film was able to advance the Star Wars story, and also contribute to advanced techniques in visual effects and sound. One of those techniques was the use of actors to portray digital characters and we have Ahmed Best to thank for the advancements made here.
While the character of Jar Jar Binks may have divided many, the work done by Ahmed was incredible and his performance allowed those at ILM to use their technological wizardry to bring the character to life on screen. It’s somewhat disconcerting to read that Ahmed contemplated taking his own life following the media backlash he received in portraying this character.
20 years next year I faced a media backlash that still affects my career today. This was the place I almost ended my life. It’s still hard to talk about. I survived and now this little guy is my gift for survival. Would this be a good story for my solo show? Lemme know. pic.twitter.com/NvVnImoJ7N

Some may not like the film, or Jar Jar, but nobody needs to be made to feel like this. We’re thankful Ahmed managed to come out of the other side and we send him our love. We look forward to seeing Ahmed on his solo tour!
