The LEGO Movie 2: The Rexcelsior (Set #70839) Announced at Toy Fair UK

LEGO announced a new set yesterday at Toy Fair UK, the first second half set for 2019 to be announced. Coming on 1st May, The Rexcelsior (#70839) comes from The LEGO Movie 2 and features 1,826 pieces for £139.99, $149.99 or €149.99. Read on for the press release and images.

Building on the successes of last year, which marked 60 years of the iconic brick, The LEGO Group is continuing to inspire and develop the next generation of builders through exciting new play innovations at Toy Fair in 2019, including sets that will see ‘fluid’ play come to the fore, effortlessly combining physical and digital play experiences.

Coined the year to #StayPlayful, the brand is asking families to take on the 2019 play pledge and celebrate the awesome power of building play and its impact on creativity and imagination, skills that continue to grow in importance for kids and adults, as evidenced by The LEGO Play Well Report 2018*.

In 2018, the LEGO Group had a strong year with their core ranges, along with the likes of superheroes and Wizarding Worlds which proved to be popular franchises with fans. Alongside LEGO City & Friends sets, The LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall became one of the 23 LEGO sets to appear in the top 100 selling items in the UK toy market (NPD, 2018) and topped Christmas lists across the UK after it was included in the prestigious 2018 Dream Toys.

Building on this movie driven franchise success, the upcoming release of “The LEGO® Movie: The Second Part” is an exciting start to the year for the brand.

The much-anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed, global box office phenomenon The LEGO Movie, “The LEGO® Movie 2: The Second Part” reunites the heroes of Bricksburg in an all new action-packed adventure to save their beloved city.  It’s been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are now facing a huge new threat: LEGO Alien invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than it can be rebuilt. The battle to defeat the invaders and restore harmony to the LEGO universe will test Emmet, Lucy (and their friends) courage, creativity and Master Building skills.

In line with the movie release, and inspiring families of all ages and abilities, The LEGO Groups new range of The LEGO Movie 2 products gives the opportunity to extend the LEGO Movie experience into the home. Families can build awesome sets together and unlock endless creativity and imagination by stepping in to Emmet’s world, re-living the action and adventure of the film.

One set which is great fun for all the family – no matter age or ability – is the THE LEGO® MOVIE 2™ LEGO Movie Maker. Intertwining physical building with digital play, the new set allows families to create their own LEGO movie at home. This action-packed product has been included alongside other market-leading toys in the Hero Toy selection at Toy Fair 2019. Featuring a movie stage and swivelling camera stand, fans can choose Apocalypseburg or Systar System as their backdrop, then shoot the action with nine characters from the film, plus Emmet’s Escape Buggy, Rex’s buildable Rexplorer and mini Systar Starship.

This ‘fluid’ play, with real world, imaginary and digital experiences, is becoming more commonplace within the toy industry. When asked, Marius Lang, Head of Marketing UK / Ireland at The LEGO Group said, “Play is changing and at The LEGO Group we are committed to ensuring all elements of it – real-life, imaginary and digital – are encapsulated in our products to create unlimited play and learning experiences for the whole family.”

“LEGO play is dedicated to innovation and being able to rebuild and reinvent. We’ve recently been testing Augmented Reality experiences which turns LEGO sets into interactive games, blending physical and digital play for the ultimate mixed reality experience. Building will always be at the core of LEGO, but we are innovating in order to create new opportunities for families to play together – not divide them. As play becomes more dynamic, the importance of technology becomes clearer, and we know that digital can enhance, not take away from play and family time”.

The LEGO Group has teased something big coming later this year, but when asked, Marius Lang simply remarked, “watch this space…”

To coincide with this year’s Toy Fair, LEGO Group has this morning also announced a new “The LEGO® Movie: The Second Part” product in a global exclusive reveal.

The LEGO® Rexcelsior, RRP 139.99, Rex’s Dangervest spaceship, is shaped like a fist and gives builders of all ages the chance to take control of all-action hero Dangervest’s vessel. The 1,826 piece model features a rapid-fire, 6-missile spring-loaded shooter with shooting function and a trigger in the back, allowing them to role-play space missions with Rex, Emmet and Rex’s raptor crew. The global exclusive is being revealed at Toy Fair UK on the 22nd January 2019.

The LEGO Group will be showcasing products at Toy Fair UK from 22nd – 24th January at Kensington Olympia (invitation only).
