While everyone knows the big name Exhibitors that are spread out across the convention floor at New York Comic Con, one of my favorite things to do each year is to find Star Wars products on display at some of the lesser-known booths. These booths are usually stationed away from the prime real estate sections of the convention floor – either along the extreme sides or towards the back corners. We found two such booths while navigating the NYCC floor – Geek Orthodox and Spitfire Labs. Geek Orthodox designs a variety of amazing stained glass static clings while Spitfire Labs utilizes laser engraving techniques to create exceptional carvings in rich cherry wood.
Check out our photos from their NYCC booths and take each provided link to visit their respective websites for more information.
Throughout time, every culture has made its own heroes, villains and icons about whom we create artwork and stories as a way of understanding the universe and our place within it. We believe that in modern geek culture many popular characters and institutions serve this function, and juxtaposing those images with a historic artistic medium like stained glass is a way for us to show how important a role they play in individual identity in modern society.
Spitfire Labs is a Brooklyn based, Husband & Wife team with years of work in the visual effects community. The company was founded in May of 2015 with the intention of producing high quality Laser engraved wood art pieces featuring their eclectic style that covers such mediums as Television, Movies, Video Games, Folklore, Mythology, and Pop Culture. The cherry wood they use for most of their pieces is treated with all natural, non-toxic chemicals, which help keep the environment safe, and our Earth happy, and all materials are locally sourced when applicable.
Each piece they make is numbered and inspected and only ships if it meets their highest quality of standards that gets put into each and every piece they produce.
