London Olympia Gets Go Ahead for £1bn Refurbishment

Plans to refurbish the 133 year old London Olympia venue with an investment of £1bn have been given the go ahead. Olympia is the home of the UK Toy Fair UK numerous Comic Con like shows during the year.

The BTHA, who has been in close contact with Hammersmith and Fulham Council over the past year regarding the issue, informed industry members of the plans to go ahead with the major refurbishment project earlier this week.

Olympia London has highlighted that while it is determined to minimise any potential inconvenience to events and has appointed 50 experts to develop a detailed logistics plan, the plans will see a number of changes to the design of the venue.

None of these however will affect the structure of London Toy Fair which plans to proceed with its 2020 event from January 21st to 23rd as normal.

Designs for the Olympia will include an extended high-end events space, communal areas and co-working spaces, as well as new leisure facilities. Olympia plans to include onsite accommodation and food offerings.

A new logistics centre will aim to enable more efficient traffic marshalling.

Nigel Nathan, managing director, said: “As the jewel in the crown of our industry, Olympia London has created lifelong memories for millions of people and with this investment, we will continue to do so while retaining our portfolio of events.

“Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter in Olympia London’s rich history.”

Chris Skeith, CEO, association of event organisers, added: “It’s excellent news for the events community that planning permission has been granted for this iconic, world-class venue. Olympia London has been home to some of the UK’s leading shows for decades, and we’re excited to continue hosting events both throughout the refurbishment and beyond.”

Developers have stated they will keep the BTHA fully updated on the project, while applications for the 2020 London Toy Fair are now open.
