Javits in New York and ExCeL in London to Become Temporary Hospitals

It was less than 5 weeks ago that we attended the International Toy Fair in New York at the Javits Center. The world is now locked down trying to fight COVID-19 and Javits, also the home to New York Comic Con, is preparing to be turned into a makeshift temporary hospital.

From Bloomberg — Construction will begin this week to turn the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan into a 1,000-bed hospital, a first step toward eventually doubling that number, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

The main showroom of the center will be broken up into four 250-bed hospitals each about 40,000 square feet in size, Cuomo said at a briefing Monday at the center. There will be 320 Federal Emergency Management Agency workers assigned to the hospitals.

Meanwhile on the other side of the ‘pond’ in the UK, ExCeL London, the home to two previous Star Wars Celebrations, is also being turned into an emergency hospital.

From MyLondon — ExCel London in Newham, which has a capacity of nearly 70,000 visitors, will be turned into The NHS Nightingale Hospital after it was visited by planners from the Ministry of Defence.

The Health Secretary Matt Hancock announced the temporary hospital this evening (Tuesday, March 24) at the daily press conference..UK govt health secretary.

He announced that the military to help establish the emergency coronavirus facility of two 2,000 patient wards.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. We all long for the day that these centers can be used again for our pleasure and we hope that all our readers and their families stay safe and healthy during this difficult time. Clear skies and MTFBWY!
