Does Star Wars Film Schedule Give Clue to Celebration Timing?

With the roadmap of upcoming Star Wars films released by Disney, does this offer a clue to upcoming Celebration events?

Disney Studios has announced that the next theatrical film in the Star Wars saga post-Episode IX will be arriving in a few years as part of their updated film release schedule. The next Star Wars film is slated to be released on December 16, 2022 followed by a film scheduled for December 20, 2024 and December 18, 2026, giving a two year gap between each release.

With Star Wars Celebration Chicago earlier this year and another set for 2020 in Anaheim will the pattern after next year’s event follow the film schedule? This year is also a D23 Expo year and Disney put that event on every two years, meaning that the next D23 event will be in 2021, and then 2023. Having Celebration and D23 Expo in the same year means that Disney has to split Star Wars announcements and also resources. Having an event each year gives Disney (and Lucasfilm) the ability to optimize announcements, resources, exclusives and more. Having Celebration in a Star Wars film year allows Disney to promote the film to a paying crowd, with the world’s press watching, whilst showcasing the trailer and cast.

Could this be how the D23 Expo and Celebration events pan out over the next few years?

  • Star Wars Celebration Chicago 2019 – The Rise of Skywalker, The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars
  • Disney D23 Expo Anaheim 2019
  • Star Wars Celebration Anaheim 2020 – The Empire Strikes Back 40th Anniversary
  • Disney D23 Expo 2021
  • Star Wars Celebration 2022 – Untitled Star Wars Film, Attack of the Clones 20th Anniversary
  • Disney D23 Expo 2023
  • Star Wars Celebration 2024 – Untitled Star Wars Film
  • Disney D23 Expo 2025
  • Star Wars Celebration 2026 – Untitled Star Wars Film
  • Disney D23 Expo 2027

This does not take into account the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi in 2023, 20th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith in 2025 or even the 50th anniversary of Star Wars in 2027 which could result in an additional Celebration event. Perhaps in the D23 Expo years Disney may decide to bring Celebration back to Europe.

As much as we all love Celebration, having events in consecutive years is costly and I think the vast majority of fans would prefer the event to happen every other year. We look forward to whatever happens next and in the meantime we are all eagerly waiting for the dates for next year’s Celebration in Anaheim. We hope to see you there.
