As I spent the evening of May the 4th Be With You getting my Convention juices flowing by watching Kyle Newman’s Fanboys, “Revenge of the 5th” crept up like a Jawa from behind a rock on Tatooine, and I couldn’t have dreamed of a better way of spending it this year, than at the second annual “Dinner with the Star Wars Stars II” at Burnley Football Club in Lancashire, as part of the Star Wars Fan Fun Day celebrations. Stars in attendance at this years event were Dave Prowse, Jeremy Bulloch, Julian Glover, Chris Muncke, Cathy Munroe, Rusty Goffe, Alan Ruscoe, Marc Silk & Nick Joseph. Femi Taylor, who played Oola in Return of the Jedi would attend the following day, at the Star Wars Fan Fun Day.
At Dinner with the Star Wars Stars, I was lucky enough to be seated with TV & Film voice actor, Marc Silk, who aside from appearing in The Phantom Menace, as the Gran Senator, Aks Moe, has worked on other projects including the US version of Bob the Builder, where he voiced the title character, as well as portraying Johnny Bravo in the hit animated series for Cartoon Network UK. Marc was a delight to meet, and had many a story to tell about his work in showbiz, and was a true gent throughout the night, entertaining us all with stories from his career, as well as providing voices from many of the projects he has worked on, including “Pingu”, “Roary the Racing Car” & “Fifi & the Flowertots.” Marc also donated to the Charity Raffle that evening, as he was kind enough to provide a voiceover for an Answer Machine message as one of the prizes.
We were also lucky enough to be seated at the same table as event organiser Neil Livesey, and his wonderful wife Suzanne, as well as Dave Oldbury from i.let-the-wookie-win.com and the Facebook page Starwars Autograph collecting, unfortunately, fellow autograph collector Frank Rich, from The Star Wars Autograph Collection was unable to attend this year, due to the tragic events that unfolded in his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts recently, however Neil made sure to remind everyone in attendance at the Dinner to stay Boston strong, and we will!
As the evening progressed, we were treated to a wonderful three course meal, including a starter consisting of Fan of Honeydew Melon, served with Forest Fruits & a Citrus Sorbet (My personal favourite dish of the evening), a main course of Chicken Breast, stuffed with Sage & Onion, wrapped in Bacon & served with Potatoes, Vegetables & Thyme Gravy, and topped off with a Strawberry Cheesecake Dessert. We also enjoyed Tea & Coffee after the meal, and Alcoholic beverages served at the Bar. The staff at Burnley Football Club did a fantastic job of looking after everyone, and I applaud them on their efforts.
Entertainment was also on hand throughout the night, as attendees were treated to some Star Wars inspired Rhythm & Blues, courtesy of the band Blues Harvest! There was also a Raffle held, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs, kindly donated by event sponsors Prestige Flowers, as well as various Star Wars stars, including John Coppinger, sculptor of Jabba the Hutt for Return of the Jedi, and the Wookiee Senator Yarua in The Phantom Menace, whom I was lucky enough to win a signed action figure of! Also up for grabs were cardboard standees, including one of an AT-AT, signed by General Veers himself, Julian Glover! As part of another giveaway, a Replica Stormtrooper helmet, kindly supplied by RS Prop Masters was also up for grabs! There were also opportunities for photographs with the Star Wars stars, as well as a moment of reflection and appreciation for the late, great Richard Le Parmentier, who played Admiral Motti in A New Hope, who sadly passed away before having the chance to appear at this years event.
A Star Wars Quiz was also held as the evening began to draw to a close, which our table unfortunately lost, but it was great to take part! Overall the evening could not have gone better. It was an incredibly successful evening, which I am sure raised an amazing amount of money for the East Lancashire Hospice, and I am honoured and privileged to say I was in attendance that evening. It was great to be in the same room as so many like minded people, and to enjoy such a lovely meal in such brilliant company is yet another Star Wars experience I will never forget.
