HasLab TVC Jabba’s Sail Barge (The Khetanna) UK Price Analysis

It seems the link to purchase Jabba’s Sail Barge (The Khetanna) in the UK and other territories outside of North America will go live at the end of the month.

We have looked at the total cost of the Barge in the UK based on the prices specified in the eBay auction, equating to £639.47, and this cost breaks down as follows: –

  • The Barge is the same price as that offered to those in North America via HasLab $499.99 which currently equates to £376.60.
  • Priority shipping to the UK is £140.48; this is a huge item! Standard shipping was included in the cost for those in North America.
  • In North America sales tax was added where applicable. Here in the UK we have to add VAT at the rate of 20% and this is likely charged on the total cost of The Barge including postage. Total cost of the Barge including postage is £517.08 and 20% of this is £103.42. eBay is suggesting import charges of £122.39, assuming £103.42 is VAT and the remainder (£18.97) is duties and fees.

How does the price compare to those that bought the Barge in North America? The Barge is obviously costing more for us in the UK, we have to factor in shipping (Hasbro have already paid to have these all dropped shipped in the US, and we have to pay to get them from the US to the UK), VAT and other custom charges. If we add the average sales tax charged in the US (7.25%) to the original cost of the Barge this equates to $536.24. If we then compare that to the total cost of the Barge shipped to the UK which is $848.98, the difference is $312.74 or 58%. This price difference is not new, we have been complaining about the cost of US goods in the UK for many years and there is little we can do about it. This does illustrate though that it is not the manufacturer, in this case Hasbro, making more money from products sold in the UK; the extra money goes on shipping and VAT/other taxes paid to the UK Government.

How does this price compare to that offered by DarkSideToys.co.uk this time last year? The official sale works out more expensive than the sold-out offering from Dark Side Toys, who last year were offering the Barge shipped to the UK for £599.99 (and this included the booklet which is omitted form the official HasLab sale). The difference is around 6.7% and it should be noted that this time last year the exchange rate was better for those in the UK, getting almost $1.40 to the pound as opposed to $1.33 to the pound today. If the exchange rate was the same today the cost of the Barge would drop to £606.49 — almost the same cost as that from DarkSideToys.

Will the price influence your decision to buy the Barge or will you ‘Buy it now’ regardless of the price? Let us know on social media.

In the meantime, bookmark the eBay page and we will share more information with you as soon as we can.
